At the time of the Meiji Restoration,
missionary work was launched. Kiuemonn Honda,
who had been baptized at Tsukij-iinaribashi
Catholic Church,
longed to have a church built for the local
people. Since the number of the faithful
in Asakusa district increased, the assembly
halll,
which Assistant Priest Langrey from Tsukiji
Catholic Church had built in Asakusa, became
too small.
Fr. Langrey's regular visit to the hall couldn't
meet local people's needs anymore.
At that time, it was impossible to obtain
permission to build a church
in an area outside the Aliens Settlement.
However Father Langrey was allowed to build
a school and on April 15, 1877, Maikai School
was consecrated.
Father Langrey was invited to teach as a
foreign teacher. That day 40 people were
baptized in a room of the school which was
called St. Paul's Chapel.
The missionary work based at Maikai School
was rewarded with remarkable results. On
December 1877 the school was moved
to Muko-yanagihara 1 chome, the site of the
present Asakusa Catholic Church. By that
time, there were as many as 200 lay people.
Later on in Kodenma and Yokokawa, neighboring
properties were purchased in the name of
lay people and sub Parish was founded
there.
On the seventh anniversary of Maikai School,
there were more than 1000 lay people in the
Asakusa Catholic Church district .
